Setting Up New Phone Dialing Rules

All Infobahn customers should be aware that on July 1, 2001 it will be necessary to dial all 10 digits of a phone number when making a local call (i.e. instead of calling 308-6100 you will have to dial 412-308-6100). This will require a few minor changes to your dialer configuration. Instructions are given below on how to do this. Please take a look at the instructions that apply to your system.

Windows 95/98

  1. Click on the Start button and then select Settings. Click on "Control Panels" from the pop-up menu.

  2. Open the Modems control panel.

  3. Click on the Dialing Properties button

  4. If the Area Code given is not the same as the phone number the modem is connected to, please change the area code to match or create a new location. As an example, if the modem is connected to 412-555-1212, then the area code should be 412.

  5. Click on the Area Code Rules button.

  6. Make sure that "Always dial the area code (10 digit dialing)" is checked.

  7. Click on the OK button.

  8. Click on the Apply button and then on the OK button.

  9. Click on the OK button to close the Modems control panel.

  10. Close the Control Panels window

  11. Open MyComputer.

  12. Open Dial-up Networking.

  13. Locate your Infobahn dial-up connection (called either Infobahn or Connection to xxx-xxx-6100) and then right-click on the icon. Select Properties from the pop-up menu.

  14. Click on the General tab.

  15. Make sure that "there is a check in the box beside "Use area code and Dialing Properties. Also make sure that the area code is entered before the phone number you are dialing. (If you're not sure of the area code, a complete list of Infobahn's dial-up numbers can be found here.)

  16. Click on the OK button to save the changes.


Windows ME

  1. Open the Control Panel (Click on the Start button, Settings and then on Control Panel)

  2. Open the Telephony control panel(If you cannot see this control panel, you may need to click on "View all Control Panel Options")

  3. Click on the "My Locations" tab.

  4. Click on the Area Code Rules tab.

  5. Under "When calling within my area code" make sure there is a check next to "Always dial the area code (10-digit dialing)". Click on the OK button.

  6. Click on the Apply button and then the OK button.

  7. Close the Control Panels window.

  8. Click on the Start button and then select Settings. Click on "Network and Dial-up Connections" from the pop-up menu.

  9. Select the network/phone book entry you use to dial into Infobahn, and then click the right mouse button and select Properties from the pop-up menu.

  10. Make sure that "Use dialing rules" is checked and that the area code of the phone number you are dialing is entered.

  11. Click on OK to save your changes.

  12. Close the "Network and Dial-up Connections" control panel.


Windows XP

  1. Open the Control Panel (Click on the Start button, then click on Control Panel)

  2. Open the Phone and Modems control panel

  3. Click on the Dialing Rules tab

  4. Click on MyLocation and then on the Edit button

  5. Click on the Area Code Rules tab

  6. Click on the New button

  7. Enter the area code of the access number you will be calling. Check "Include the area code" and then click on the OK button.

  8. Click on the Apply button and then the OK button.


Windows NT 4.0

  1. Click on the Start button and then select Settings. Click on "Control Panels" from the pop-up menu.

  2. Open the Modems control panel.

  3. Click on the Dialing Properties button

  4. If the Area Code given is not the same as the phone number the modem is connected to, please change the area code to match or create a new location. As an example, if the modem is connected to 412-555-1212, then the area code should be 412.

  5. Click on the Area Code Rules button.

  6. Make sure that "Always dial the area code (10 digit dialing)" is checked.

  7. Click on the OK button.

  8. Click on the Apply button and then on the OK button.

  9. Click on the Close button to close the Modems control panel.

  10. Close the Control Panels window

  11. Open MyComputer.

  12. Open Dial-up Networking.

  13. Select the Phone book entry you use to dial into Infobahn from the list.

  14. Click on the More button and then select "Edit entry and modem properties..." from the menu that appears.

  15. Make sure that there is a check in the box beside "Use Telephony dialing Properties. Also make sure that the area code is entered before the phone number you are dialing. (If you're not sure of the area code, a complete list of Infobahn's dial-up numbers can be found here.)

  16. Click on the OK button to save the changes.


Windows 2000

  1. Click on the Start button and then select Settings. Click on "Control Panels" from the pop-up menu.

  2. Open the Phone and Modem Options control panel.

  3. Click on the Dialing Rules tab.

  4. Click on the area code for your area and then on the Edit button.

  5. Click on the Area Code Rules tab.

  6. Click on the New button.

  7. Enter the area code for your phone number. Under prefixes, make sure that the circle beside "Include all the prefixes within this area code" has a dot. Also make sure that "Include the area code" is checked under Rules.

  8. Click on the OK button.

  9. Click on the Apply button and then OK.

  10. Click on the Apply button and then OK again to close the Phone and Modem Options control panel.

  11. Close the Control Panels window.

  12. Click on the Start button and then select Settings. Click on "Network and Dial-up Connections" from the pop-up menu.

  13. Select the network/phone book entry you use to dial into Infobahn, and then click the right mouse button and select Properties from the pop-up menu.

  14. Make sure that "Use dialing rules" is checked and that the area code of the phone number you are dialing is entered.

  15. Click on OK to save your changes.

  16. Close the "Network and Dial-up Connections" control panel.


MacOS 8.5 - 9.1

  1. Select Control Panels from the Apple menu, then select Remote Access from the pop-up list.

  2. Make sure that the area code is entered before the phone number.

  3. Close the Remote Access control panel and save the changes.


MacOS 7.5 (with Open Transport PPP) - 8.1

  1. Select Control Panels from the Apple menu, then select PPP from the pop-up list.

  2. Make sure that the area code is entered before the phone number.

  3. Close the PPP control panel and save the changes.


MacOS with FreePPP

  1. Select Control Panels from the Apple menu, then select Config PPP from the pop-up list.

  2. Make sure that dial-up connection you use is selected (next to PPP Server).

  3. Click on the Config... button

  4. Make sure that the area code is enterd in front of the phone number.

  5. Click on the Done button.

  6. Close the Config PPP control panel.
