Macintosh Software Configuration -- General
Determing the type of Networking Software present on your Mac
In order to determine the type of networking software that may be installed on you
Mac, the first thing to do is to determine the version of the operating system.
To do this, go to the Finder, then select About This Macintosh... from the Apple
menu. A dialog will then appear listing the system software version. If you have anything
earlier than System 7.5 you must use MacTCP.
If you have System 7.5 or later, you can use either MacTCP or OpenTransport. To determine
which is installed, simply look at your control panels. If you see a MacTCP control
panel, then you have MacTCP. If you see only a TCP/IP control panel, then you are using
OpenTransport. If you don't see anything, then you will have to install
one or the other of the above from your system floppies or CD-ROM.
What if I don't have MacTCP?
If you do not have a copy of MacTCP there is a copy avaliable on the Infobahn FTP
site at ftp.icubed.com/pub/software/macintosh. The file to retrieve is MacTCP.hqx.
(Beware that you will also need StuffIt Expander to open the archive). Once you
have the file and have expanded it, simply drag it onto the system folder and release.
The system software will then put MacTCP where it belongs. You will then need to
restart your Mac to load the control panel.
Setting Up a Mac for use with Infobahn International
Before you can begin, you should obtain and install the following software (Assuming
you don't have the Apple Internet Connection Kit -- which will install these automatically):
- MacTCP control panel (supplied with System 7.5 and later, optional for older system
versions)
- MacPPP or FreePPP (I recommend FreePPP 2.5v3 - it is available on our ftp site
at ftp.icubed.com/pub/software/macintosh)
- Netscape Navigator (several versions are available on our FTP site)
Once you have installed MacTCP and MacPPP or FreePPP you can begin configuration.
MacTCP Configuration
- Open the MacTCP control panel
- Click on the PPP icon, then on the More... button
- In the resulting screen, enter the following information:
| Gateway address |
208.0.146.1 |
| DNS information |
icubed.com 208.0.145.7 (default/primary)
icubed.com 208.0.145.2 |
- Select a server assigned IP address and select class C from the address type pull-down.
(Do this last or you will not be able to enter the information above.)
- Click on "OK" to save changes. (In the main MacTCP screen you should see an IP address
of 192.0.0.0. If not, click on "More..." again and check your settings.)
- Click on Go-away box for the main MacTCP control panel. (You may have to restart your
Mac for changes to take effect)
TCP/IP Configuration:
- Open the TCP/IP control panel.
- Select "FreePPP" in the "Connect via:" pull-down list. If you
do not see a choice for FreePPP, then you probably have not installed
FreePPP yet. Please do so.
- Select "Using PPP server" from the "Configure" pull-down
list.
- Enter the following DNS information:
| Name server addr: |
Search domains: |
| 208.0.145.2 |
icubed.com |
| 192.156.226.50 |
prep.net |
- Click on the close box in the TCP/IP control panel. Click on
"Save" when asked if you want to save the changes.
MacPPP/FreePPP Configuration:
- Open the control panels folder and look for the ConfigPPP control panel.
- Open the ConfigPPP control panel.
- Select appropriate serial port from Port Name pull-down menu.
- In the main screen, click on the "New..." button to create a new connection.
- Give this connection an appropriate name, then click on the "OK" button.
In the main ConfigPPP screen, the new connection should be active.
- Click on the "Config..." button.
- In the screen that appears, select the port speed for your modem (We find that 19200
works well for 14.4 kbps modems and 38400 for 288. and 33.6 kbps modems). Leave flow control as None,
select the appropriate dial type, enter the phone number and modem initialization
string (We find that ATE1 V1 - the default for Hayes-compatible modems - works well).
- Click on the "Authentication..." button to enter login information. In the resulting
screen enter the following:
| Auth. ID. |
Your Dial-in username |
| Password |
Enter your Dial-in password |
| Retries |
1 |
| Timeout |
10 |
Click on the "OK" button to save your changes.
- Click on the "Done" button to save changes to PPP server.
You should now be able to click
on the "Open" button and begin the dial-in process. If the "Open" button is not enabled
(i.e. is gray), restart your Mac with extensions off (Hold down the Shift key when
starting), then go into the system folder and put MacTCP DNR into the trash. Also, go
into the system folder, open the preferences folder and put MacTCP prefs into the
trash. Empty the trash and then restart the Mac. Open the MacTCP control panel
again and make sure that PPP is highlighted. You should now be able to click on the "Open" button.
(If this still does not work, open the MacTCP control panel, click on the LocalTalk
icon, close the window and restart. Go back into MacTCP and click on the PPP icon
-- you should now be able to dial in)
