Setting up Windows 98 for Infobahn

There are currently two different versions of Windows 98. These are the original release, which shipped in August of 1998 and the "Second Edition", which shipped in June of 1999. The newer release included many bug fixes and, most importantly, Internet Explorer version 5. How do you determine which version you have? The simplest way is:
  1. Open the Control Panel (Click on the Start Button, click on Settings and then on Control Panel).

  2. Locate the System control panel and double-click on its icon to open the control panel.

  3. If the General tab is not the active one, click on the text General to make it active.

  4. Look under "System:". If you see something like "Microsoft Windows 98, Second Edition", then you have the newer version of Windows 98. Please proceed to the section Windows 98 Second Edition.

  5. Click on Cancel to close the System control panel.
