Co. D 149th Pa. Vols.

This unit saw action at several key points of the war. They were at the Seminary during the first day of fighting at Gettysburg, while a short distance away the rest of the 149th was being severely tested at McPherson's barn and the railroad cut. Their close proximity to the front line during Pickett's charge provides a good first-hand account of the fighting. There are many anecdotes of the experiences of men under fire, and a few of the day to day life of a soldier. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have.

Notes on the document formating

I have attempted to present the history part of this book as accurately as I could. The original printing is justified on both sides with liberal use of hyphenated words to get sentences to line up. When my wife and I first transcribed it, we removed the hyphens and let wrapping take over. We found however, that there were several typos that we would be correcting by changing the format. Rather than essentially editing the text, we decided to present it as close as possible to the original format. The Browser does seem to make a difference, so I suggest using Netscape. I have not gotten a scanner yet, so none of the pictures are included at this time, and we have not even begun to do the Personal Sketches part. They will be added as time permits. If anyone has an interest in a particular member of the unit, let me know and we'll try to get their "sketch" posted sooner.
